Erik Vandenburg was an inhabitant of Stuttgart, Germany. He is the father of Max Vandenburg.

He fought in World War I, where he saved Hans Hubermann's life. He made a deal with Hans that if either one of them died, the other would take care of their family. He taught Hans how to play the accordion in France. He died in 1918 in battle, and his accordion was given to Hans. His son, Max, went to hide from the Nazi 24 years later.
